This is a newsletter from the University of Malawi College of Medicine Department of Family Medicine

We are excited to share with you our September newsletter

With generous support from Providence St. Joseph Health Global Partnerships and the hard work of Dr. Anna McDonald, Carrie Schonwald, and Dr. Jacob Nettleton, two Malawi Family Medicine MMeds, Dr. Patrick Chisepo and Dr. Stanley Mwalwanda, are participating in a 6 week rotation in Seattle, Washington, USA to learn about healthcare from a different perspective.
Our Nkhoma team. From left, Drs. Catherine Hodge, Patrick Chisepo (MMed-Yr 3), and Amos Mailosi (MMed-Yr 1). And a big welcome to the newest member of the Nkhoma Family Medicine family, Dr. Christina Miller. As our medical students say, “big up!” Nkhoma team.
The College of Medicine, led by Professor Adamson Muula, along with other organizations in Malawi is part of an 8 country research consortium supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH-USA) to improve care of non-communicable diseases through advancing implementation science research. Some from the Malawi team attended a consortium meeting in Antigua, Guatemala 5-7 Sept. To learn more: http://gritconsortium.org and follow @gritconsortium for updates.
The first cohort of MBBS Year 4 (medical) students started their family medicine rotation on 9-Sept (21 total). Students will rotate at one of 4 rural hospitals. We also hosted two Family Medicine Awareness Sessions; one in Lilongwe with MBBS Year 3 students and one in Blantyre (pictured) with MBBS Year 2 students aimed at building understanding about the role Family Physicians play in healthcare.
The bright and smiling of faces of some of our Faculty in Mangochi for teaching and exams. From left, Drs. John Parks, Prosper Lutala, Colin Pfaff, Annet Hofland (seated), and Martha Makwero.
Palliative Care Corner
We were honored to see a large delegation from Malawi attend the 6th International African Palliative Care Conference in Kigali, Rwanda. Our lecturers Duncan Kwaitana and Dr. Jane Bates represented the Department and College well.
