WONCA’s Response to Global Crises: Principles and Practice
The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) is committed to a mission that includes improving the quality of life and promoting values such as respect for universal human rights and equity. WONCA calls for the protection of civilians from military actions and for safe working conditions for health personnel.
WONCA has issued statements and taken actions in response to significant global crises:
- Response to the Ukraine Invasion (2022):
- In March 2022, WONCA issued a statement calling for the protection of civilians and health personnel, urging members to support colleagues, and calling for an immediate end to the conflict.
- WONCA News maintained a call for solidarity and promoted multiple ways to support Ukraine.
- WONCA encouraged members to take action and support key humanitarian relief organisations like the International Committee of the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF), and UNFPA, highlighting their logistical infrastructure.
- Additional support was provided by WONCA’s Working Party on Mental Health and Special Interest Group on Migrant Care.
- WONCA Europe dedicated its conference to Ukraine.
- Response to the Israeli and Palestinian Crisis (October 2023 onwards):
- WONCA issued a statement in October 2023 sharing dismay at the destruction and loss of life, calling for protection of healthcare workers and facilities, and hoping for peaceful resolution.
- The WONCA Europe Executive Board expressed sadness, sympathy with affected populations, and strong support for healthcare workers under duress. It acknowledged terrorist attacks, hostages, and the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, supporting equal justice and freedom, and called for protection of civilians and safe working conditions.
- A statement in June 2024 condemned terrorism and oppression globally, supported health professionals in conflict zones, and called for protection of patients, workers, and facilities.
