South Africa officially entered its third wave on Thursday, 10 June (according to the formula the country uses) amidst a slower than expected vaccine roll-out, hampered by the lack of availability of shots.
Our infections are rising at a concerning pace. On Thursday, when South Africa saw 9 149 new COVID cases, the proportion of tests that came out positive was 15.7% — significantly above the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) threshold of 5%, which indicates that the pandemic is out of control.
