Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi (pictured above) has confirmed that the government would ‘bit by bit’ phase in the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme and that medical schemes will not face an imminent end.

Speaking to Citywire SA on the sidelines of a media briefing on Monday, Motsoaledi said NHI would be implemented in phases.

‘The phase we’re in now… is preparation for healthcare facilities, the building of hospitals… and the establishment of committees.’

To this end, according to the untabled 2025 Budget review, the Treasury planned to allocate R8.5bn to the indirect conditional NHI grant and R1.44bn to the direct conditional NHI grant for the 2025 medium-term expenditure framework period, split over three years.

Asked whether the almost R10bn in allocated NHI funding was sufficient, Motsoaledi said it was ‘for now’. ….more
