This webinar will provide insight into medication safety within primary care. It will cover the areas in which medication-related harm can occur within primary care. It will also highlight important improvement work that has taken place to make medicines safer in primary care, and a system-wide approach to medication reconciliation. It will conclude by discussing good medicines management in GP Practices and Community Pharmacies to minimise harm.

About the presenter Dr Neil Houston was a GP Principal in Dollar, Scotland. He was a Scottish Patient Safety Programme Fellow and the National GP Clinical Lead for the Scottish Patient Safety Programme in Primary Care with Healthcare Improvement Scotland which spread to over 1000 GP practices. He has recently developed and implemented a patient safety programme in Auckland New Zealand for GPs and Community Pharmacy with a specific focus on Safer Medicines.

Intended audience: Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Managers, Administrators whose health system includes an outpatient pharmacy, GPs, Practice Managers and other prescribers in Primary Care.

They have shared Prof. Richard Roberts’ talk in TEDx University Of Luxembourg (October 2018) on “Healing by numbers“. He  discusses that strategies used in manufacturing are now being applied to healthcare: assembly line production, protocol-driven care, big data. These strategies promise improved population health at lower cost. Yet, linear production models can do great harm in healthcare. This is especially true in primary care where most care is obtained and where custom solutions must be developed for each patient. Also here.

They have strong links to WHO and shared “PULSE” of WHO Global Learning Laboratory for Quality UHC (Universal Health Coverage). It provides a summary of what the group achieved in 2018.
