As countries around the world commit to providing health to all their people, primary health care is recognized as an urgent and actionable priority. The world’s first-ever UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage this September will produce a clear call-to-action for countries to prioritize primary health care as the foundation of universal health coverage. And yet, many countries lack the information and political buy-in to drive the reforms needed to strengthen primary health care and improve health outcomes.
The Primary Health Care Performance Initiative (PHCPI), a partnership dedicated to transforming the global state of primary health care, is positioned to support countries as they work to better measure – and ultimately improve – primary health care systems. PHCPI has already partnered with 12 “Trailblazer Countries” to develop Vital Signs Profiles, which provide a snapshot of the strength of primary health care in individual countries. PHCPI is forging new partnerships with countries across continents, united by the belief that the road to universal health coverage starts with better measurement.
At the 2019 World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, WHO Member States and global health leaders will convene to debate the WHO’s Primary Health Care Toward Universal Health Coverage agenda (WHA A72/12). WHA provides a key opportunity to ensure that measurement for improvement is at the center of emerging universal health coverage plans.
